Psychosynthesis

Explore the different needs and hopes within your experience

You may feel pulled in different directions: wanting closeness and independence, valuing security while longing for change, or caring for others while losing touch with your own needs. There may also be questions about identity, purpose or what gives your life meaning. It can be difficult to understand these experiences when each seems to ask something different of you.

Psychosynthesis is an approach that considers emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects of human experience. It is interested in how these aspects relate to one another and in the possibilities for personal development. I would approach this through your own understanding of yourself. Questions of spirituality or meaning would be explored only in ways that fit your interests and beliefs. Doubt, a secular outlook or having no spiritual beliefs would be respected.

You can read another introduction to psychosynthesis in BACP’s guide to therapy approaches.

What we might explore

  • Understanding needs or priorities that seem to conflict with one another.
  • Exploring the roles you take on and how they affect your sense of self.
  • Considering purpose, values and the qualities you would like to develop.

What sessions may involve

We might begin with a situation in which you felt divided and explore the feelings, needs and expectations involved. Reflective conversation could help you give language to different aspects of your experience and consider how they influence your choices. If an imaginative or creative exercise seemed useful, we would discuss it first. You could choose whether to take part and tell me how the experience felt for you.

Questions about purpose also feature in existential therapy, while personal development counselling offers space to explore values and direction.

Do I need to be spiritual or religious?

No particular belief is required. We would agree what feels relevant to you, and there would be no expectation to adopt a spiritual explanation or a religious view.
