Existential Therapy

When life raises questions without easy answers

A loss, a change in circumstances or a difficult decision can unsettle your sense of who you are and where you belong. You may find yourself asking what matters, how you want to live, or how to face something you cannot control. These questions can also arise during an ordinary period of life, when the direction you have followed no longer feels clear.

Existential therapy explores your experience of being a person in the world. It considers themes such as meaning, choice, responsibility, connection, uncertainty and the limits of life. I would work with you to understand how these themes appear in your own circumstances. The conversation can make room for conflicting feelings and difficult realities while helping you consider the possibilities available to you. You do not need to be familiar with philosophy to take part.

BACP’s introduction to existential therapy explores these themes further.

What we might explore

  • Clarifying what feels meaningful and how you want to express it in daily life.
  • Considering a choice while acknowledging uncertainty and real constraints.
  • Exploring feelings about loss, change, isolation or your place in the world.

What sessions may involve

We might explore a decision you are facing, the expectations around it and the feelings that arise when you imagine different paths. We could also spend time understanding an experience of loss or change without rushing to make it positive. I may ask about your values, relationships and sense of possibility. The aim would be to deepen understanding and support choices that feel considered and personally meaningful.

You may also want to explore personal development counselling for questions about direction, or psychosynthesis for a different way of considering values and meaning.

Is existential therapy mainly a discussion of philosophy?

Philosophical ideas inform the approach, but our conversations would stay connected to your life. Your experiences and the questions that matter to you would guide the work.
