Solution-Focused Therapy

Find a next step that feels possible

When a difficulty has taken up a lot of space, it can become hard to picture what you would like life to look like instead. You might feel that you have tried many things or that your strengths have become difficult to see. Starting with a small, meaningful difference can sometimes make the conversation feel more manageable.

Solution-Focused Therapy explores the future you would prefer and the resources you may already have. It pays particular attention to strengths, support and moments when a difficulty is less intense or you have responded in a useful way. I would work with you to describe what improvement would mean in your own terms. Your feelings and circumstances still matter; the approach gives particular attention to possibilities we can explore together.

BACP’s guide to therapy approaches includes an introduction to solution-focused brief therapy.

What we might explore

  • Describing a change that would make a meaningful difference to your daily life.
  • Recognising strengths, useful responses and support you can draw on.
  • Identifying a manageable next step and noticing what happens when you try it.

What sessions may involve

I might ask what you hope will be different as a result of counselling, or invite you to describe a recent moment that went a little better. A scale from zero to ten may help us explore where you feel you are and what a small movement forward would look like. We could then discuss something useful to try or notice. Later conversations may review what has changed and what remains difficult.

You may also want to read about reality therapy, which explores present needs, relationships and choices within your influence.

Does “solution-focused” mean I cannot talk about the problem?

You can talk about what you are experiencing. Understanding what matters to you includes hearing the difficulty. We would also explore your hopes, what is already useful and possible steps towards the changes you want.
