Reality Therapy

Work with what is within your influence

When a situation feels stuck, you may find yourself trying the same response without getting closer to what you need. Relationships can become strained, plans can lose direction, and it may be difficult to see a useful next step. There can also be real limits on your options, including circumstances and experiences you did not choose.

Reality Therapy focuses on present needs, relationships and actions. It invites you to consider what you want, what you are currently doing and whether those actions are helping you move towards what matters. I would use these questions with respect for your experiences and the constraints you face. Exploring what is within your influence does not require you to take responsibility for another person’s behaviour, an illness or harm you have experienced.

The Glasser Institute for Choice Theory explains the background to Reality Therapy.

What we might explore

  • Clarifying what you want from a relationship or a particular situation.
  • Reviewing the effects of current actions without judging your worth as a person.
  • Developing a practical step that is realistic within your circumstances.

What sessions may involve

We might begin with a situation you would like to be different and identify the needs or goals involved. Together, we could consider what you have already tried, what helped and what made things harder. If useful, we might agree a small plan within your control and review it later. A plan can be changed when circumstances shift or when experience shows that another approach is needed.

If you would like to compare ways of working with practical change, solution-focused therapy explores strengths and possible next steps.

Does this approach mean my difficulties are my fault?

No. I would not assume that suffering is chosen or that you control everything affecting your life. Our focus would be on understanding your situation and exploring actions available to you with care and respect.
