Person-Centered Therapy

A place where your experience can be heard

You may have spent a long time trying to explain yourself, keep other people happy, or make sense of feelings you cannot easily put into words. Perhaps you know something is troubling you but feel unsure where to begin. Having room to speak without needing to perform, defend yourself or arrive with an answer can matter.

Person-centred therapy places your experience at the centre of the conversation. The therapeutic relationship is grounded in empathy, acceptance and honesty. I would aim to understand the world from your perspective and support you in exploring what matters to you. You help shape the direction and pace of the work. There is space for difficult feelings, uncertainty and different sides of an experience, as well as the hopes you bring to counselling.

BACP’s explanation of person-centred counselling offers more detail on this approach.

What we might explore

  • Understanding feelings that have been difficult to acknowledge or express.
  • Recognising your own needs alongside the expectations of other people.
  • Developing a clearer sense of the choices and values that matter to you.

What sessions may involve

You might begin with something that happened during the week, a relationship concern, or a feeling that has stayed with you. I may reflect what I hear, ask questions that help you explore further, and check whether I have understood. You do not have to cover everything at once. We can also talk about how it feels to be in counselling and what you find helpful or difficult about the process.

If you are beginning with questions about confidence, boundaries or direction, you may also find the personal development counselling page useful.

Do I need a clear goal before starting?

A goal can be useful, but you can also begin by wanting to understand yourself. What you hope for may become clearer as you have space to talk and reflect.
